چکیده

Nonthermal radiation observed from astrophysical systems containing relativistic jets and shocks, e.g., gammaray bursts (GRBs), active galactic nuclei (AGNs), and microquasars commonly exhibit power-law emission spectra. Recent PIC simulations of relativistic electron-ion (or electron-positron) jets injected into a stationary medium show that particle acceleration occurs within the downstream jet. In collisionless, relativistic shocks, particle (electron, positron, and ion) acceleration is due to plasma waves and their associated instabilities (e.g., the Weibel (filamentation) instability) created in the shock region. The simulations show that the Weibel instability is responsible for generating and amplifying highly nonuniform, small-scale magnetic fields. These fields contribute to the electron’s transverse deflection behind the jet head. The resulting “jitter” radiation from deflected electrons has different properties compared to synchrotron radiation, which assumes a uniform magnetic field. Jitter radiation may be important for understanding the complex time evolution and/or spectra in gamma-ray bursts, relativistic jets in general, and supernova remnants.

No Universality for Electron’s Power-Law Index (p) in Gamma-Ray Bursts and Other Relativistic Sources

The Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) prompt emission is believed to be from highly relativistic electrons accelerated in relativistic shocks. From the GRB high-energy power-law spectral indices β observed by the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) Large Area Detectors (LAD), we determine the spectral index, p, of the electrons’ energy distribution. Both the theoretical calculations and numerical...

Signatures of a Thermal Component in Shock-Accelerated Electrons in GRBs

Recent particle-in-cell simulations suggest that a large fraction of the energy dissipated in a relativistic shock is deposited into a thermal distribution of electrons that is connected to the high-energy power-law tail. Here, we explore the observational implications of such a mixed thermal-nonthermal particle distribution for the afterglow and prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts. When the th...

The Curvaceous Early Spectra of Swift X-ray Afterglows: Late Time GRB Activity Without NH Variations

We demonstrate that the X-ray and γ-ray spectra of Swift GRBs and their afterglows are dominated by emission characteristic of an expanding, relativistic fireball. The classical afterglow due to the impact of the fireball on the external medium is often not observed until one to several hours after the GRB. Focusing on GRBs 061121, 060614, and 060124, but generalizing to the full (>50 Msec XRT ...

X-ray Hardness Evolution in GRB Afterglows and Flares: Late Time GRB Activity Without NH Variations

We show that the X-ray and γ-ray spectra of Swift GRBs and their afterglows are consistent with the emission characteristic of an expanding, relativistic fireball. Focusing on GRBs 061121, 060614, and 060124, but generalizing to the full (>50 Msec XRT ...

The flat decay phase in the early X-ray afterglows of Swift GRBs

— Many Swift GRBs show an early phase of shallow decay in their X-ray afterglows, lasting from t ∼ 10 s to ∼ 10 s after the GRB, where the flux decays as ∼ t − t. This is perhaps the most mysterious of the new features discovered by Swift in the early X-ray afterglow, since it is still not clear what causes it. I discuss different possible explanations for this surprising new discovery, as well...
